Join Simon Cairns, Nationwide General Manager of BCG Attorney Search, as he interviews Melanie Francis, Managing Director of BCG Attorney Search’s Denver office, about the Colorado legal market. Cairns studied law at the Westminster School of Law in London and also at the Inns of Court School of Law before qualifying to become a barrister in 1999. He moved to the United States and began working as a recruiter in 2004. Francis also practiced as an attorney for several years before transitioning into legal recruiting.
Francis discusses why she loves living in Colorado and why it’s one of the best places in the country to practice law. She explains that attorneys in Colorado enjoy the best of both worlds. The Denver legal market is full of excellent, challenging opportunities and sophisticated work; however, in Colorado, attorneys do not work the crazed East Coast/West Coast hours and are able to balance their work and personal lives. She notes that the work atmosphere in Colorado is also extremely relaxed and much more casual than it is in other parts of the country.
Francis also provides advice on breaking into the Colorado legal market, stating that solid ties to the state are important but not absolutely necessary and that firms are more apt to overlook ties to the state if attorneys have strong credentials. She also emphasizes that it’s essential to use a recruiter who is based in Colorado and has extensive knowledge about the job market and different firms. Finally, she discusses the growing legal market in Denver, stating that hot practice areas in the metropolitan area include real estate, corporate, land use, and environmental law.
